Timing is Everything: How to Harness Time for Business Success

Article by Steve Tobak of  The Corner Office

Good timing can turn a mediocre product into a breakout success; bad timing can destroy an otherwise successful career. In business, timing is everything. Unfortunately, most people think timing is just like luck. It isn’t. Nothing can be further from the truth. It’s a critical success factor and you can learn to use it to your advantage … or let it bite you in the you-know-what.

I don’t care if it’s a business plan, a negotiation, a customer relationship, a product launch, a presentation, a marketing campaign, a proposal, a career, or an entire corporation. Timing can make or break it; I see it happen all the time.

Unfortunately, even some of the best and brightest managers and business people consider timing as an afterthought. Their thinking goes something like this: 1) idea, 2) budget, 3) target customers or audience, 4) competition, … , 27) timing. I have no idea why, but it’s true. And sad. Really.

Here are a few examples where timing played a big role in a company’s success … or failure:

  • Adam Osborne, founder of personal computing pioneer Osborne Computer, had a hit product: a portable personal computer with a ton of bundled software for less than $2000. But with product sales at 10,000 a month – pretty hot stuff in 1983 – Osborne shot off his mouth about a new product in the works, killing dealer sales and ultimately sending the company into bankruptcy. We now caution marketers not to “osborne” an existing product by prematurely hyping a new one.
  • Qualcomm, one of the world’s largest and most successful semiconductor and intellectual property (IP) licensing companies, initially had to manufacture and sell its own wireless base stations and cell phones. Once the technology was established, it then sold off those businesses and focused solely on chips, IP, and software. That’s when its business model really began to take off.
  • In the mid-90s, Cyrix launched the world’s first Intel-compatible, Pentium-class microprocessor. But, for a number of reasons, the market wasn’t buying it and Cyrix fell on hard times. Then it launched a low-cost processor, the MediaGX, in a Compaq Presario priced at $999. That marked the start of a new era of low-cost PCs that tapped into a new trend: using PCs for low-performance tasks like Web-surfing and emailing.

Here are 6 Ways to Harness Time for Business Success:

1. There’s an old hockey saying: don’t skate to where the puck is, skate to where it’s going to be. Nobody’s prescient, but at least consider the factors and probabilities.
2. Whether it’s a product, service, campaign, whatever, think it all the way through from womb to tomb. I guarantee issues will pop up you hadn’t initially considered.
3. Before you open your mouth, consider the wisdom, or lack thereof – in terms of content, audience, and timing – of what you’re about to say.
4. Before you attempt any sort of big splash, event, announcement, or campaign, consider the broad set of factors that may affect your target audience or customer’s reaction.
5. There’s a time for throwing spaghetti against the wall and hoping something sticks, but for the most part, hope is a crappy strategy.
6. After you develop a plan, any kind of plan, bounce it off objective people with no stake in the game. Ask “what can go wrong,” especially with respect to timing.

Mortgage Fraud Scams Hit Small Business Owners

Although not “new”, more property owners are becoming forclosed on by mortgage servicing contrators.

Mortgage Servicing Contractors are not “predatory lenders.”

These companies do not loan money. They operate in the lending industry after-the-fact.  They take on a function that a lender doesn’t want – the backroom functions of handling payments, escrow accounts, annual statements, dealing with borrowers, collections, etc. The perpetrators of the loan servicing scam acquire the servicing rights to loans that other companies have already made. (Loans that were deliberately constructed by predatory lenders are ideal for processing through servicers that specialize in aggressive collections or rapid foreclosure processing, but the loan servicing scam can be operated against any mortgage loan if the servicer acquires the rights from the lender.)

These scams are designed and deliberately operated.

These situations are not errors, mistakes or situations where a servicer’s managers or employees failed to do their job. Their systems are well-designed and state-of-the-art in terms of analytical technology that helps them choose and process their victims. These scams generate enormous profits from a business that is difficult to run, people and litigation intensive and normally only marginally profitable. Many have failed and are being acquired.

Small Business Paperwork Mandate Elimination Act

REPEAL – REPEAL – REPEAL

Beginning in 2012, the new healthcare law requires businesses to send Form 1099s for every business-to-business transaction of $600 or more for both property and services – creating a tremendous new paperwork compliance burden for small business.  Independant small business owners have made it known that they want a full repeal of this law and passage of H.R. 5141 the Small Business Paperwork Mandate Elimination Act.  This will amend the Internal Revenue Code to REPEAL a provision (added by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act) the requirement to report payments of $600 or more.

The Senate will vote Sept. 14 on giving small businesses relief from a new paperwork burden imposed by health care reform.

10 Reasons Why Your Business Needs to be on the Web

In today’s high-tech world, a website can be your business’ multifaceted ticket to success!

Many business owners wonder if their company really needs a website. You may be saying “but we’re a not-for-profit organization” or “it’s just a small start-up business.” The bottom line is: if you have an organization or business, you should have a web presence. No ifs, ands or buts about it! And here’s why:

10) Quick Updates
Unlike print or other media materials, websites allow you to quickly and easily update information. You can let everyone know about new products, upcoming events and even special online deals.

9) Great PR
Launching and updating your new website can help your business get noticed. Newspapers, magazines and other online news services are always looking for a good story. Creating a powerful Press Release around your site launch will help drive even more traffic to your webpage. When you send the Press Release out to the online sources, be sure to optimize it for web searches. It’s also a great idea to post your Press Release on your website.

8) You’re always open
With a website, you don’t have to worry about time on the East Coast, West Coast, Europe or Asia because you’re open 24/7/365. Your business can continue to sell even when you are fast asleep.

7) Expand your market
Traditional small businesses are often limited to a potential market in their geographic area. Creating a website changes that completely. Suddenly your potential market expands to anyone who can find you online. By listing your website in your traditional marketing like direct mail, print ads, radio or even TV, you reach out to a dramatically larger audience. Using Search Engine Marketing (“SEM”) you can even reach a global audience.

6) Customer Feedback
Blogs and online bulletin boards allow customers to talk about what’s important to them and what they like or would like to see improved. You can gather this data and better position your product or services to meet your customers’ needs. You can even entice visitors to take an online poll – especially if they can win a prize.

5) Customer Service
Having Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and Contact Us sections on your site allow visitors to learn more about your business and get in touch with you for more information. FAQs answer visitors’ most common questions while Contact Us forms easily put them in touch with you when they want to know more information than they can find in your FAQ section. You can give 5-star customer service without having to answer the phone or hire additional staff.

4) Promote, Promote, Promote!
Promote your products, your services, your company, your ideas, your events and even yourself. Be sure to track which pages are attracting the most visitors, which ones create sales and which aren’t getting traffic so that you can update your site (remember item 10) to stay with the ever-changing market.

3) Sell, Sell, Sell!
Your website can be the best addition to your sales team. When customers visit your site, they can see what products and services you have to offer and learn why they want to purchase from your company. Your site can operate as a marketing media, a sales person, a customer service representative and a cashier all in one!

2) Capture New Customers
Having a lot of traffic visit your website is important, but customers don’t always buy the first time they visit . To make sure you are able keep in touch with these potential customers, you need to get their contact information. You can capture their information by offering a give away, a newsletter or a special promotion. Be creative! Just be sure to get their information before they leave your site.

1) Credibility
In this day and age, people expect companies to have a website. It tells potential customers that you are a viable and convenient business. Many customers, especially younger generations, will pass you over completely if you don’t have a website. Your website says, “This is a legitimate business.”
So no matter what your business size or what your business does – you need a web presence to be successful in today’s high tech society. Think of your website as a convenient marketing hub and tie all your other marketing into it. Then you will have the tools and customer base you need for business success.

Recruiting Your Seven Healers©

A physician, Dr. Henry Pham, recommended the following ” Seven Healers” and thought you may enjoy this.

1.      Air – Every living tissue in your body needs to take oxygen in and get rid of carbon dioxide. If you have less than an optimal amount, your hands and feet will get cold and you will feel tense and anxious. It takes only three minutes of deep breathing to restore a more healthy balance of air.  With 20 minutes of deep breathing, you can significantly alter the stress hormone balance of your body and move yourself toward success and away from stress.

2.      Water – Are you forgetful? Do you have trouble concentrating? Are you irritable? These can be signs of dehydration. Weigh yourself and divide that number in half. This number represents how many ounces of water that would benefit you every day. For example, if you weigh 200 pounds, you want to aim for 100 ounces of water everyday.

3.      Sleep - Disturbed sleep equals a disturbed mood, energy, and immune system. You can’t heal or have a normal or productive life if you cannot sleep. You need between 7½ and 9 hours of sleep for optimal health.

4.      FoodFood is the strongest drug you put in your body.  Eating is meant to be a source of pleasure. But use you head. To prevent cancer, heart attacks and diabetes, eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grain bread and pasta, and lean meat.  This gives you literally thousands of choices.  The key is a strong offense. Satisfy your body’s needs first, then indulge yourself, if you must, in less healthy food. If you make this a habit, your body’s needs will be met, you will feel better; eat healthier, and you will find yourself eating far less fast food and junk food.

5.      PlayExercise is the best medicine for your body! Your body was made to move. The less you move, the less you want to move, and the less you are able to move. To be healthy, play 5 days/week for at least 30 minutes (150 minutes/week).

But every animal follows these laws.  The difference between human beings and animals are the last two healers.  How successful are you at these last two?

6.      Relationships – People die without love. Your friends should bring out the best in you, while you in turn, should work to bring out the best in others. Stressful relationships make you sick. Healthy relationships keep you healthy.  The principles of reciprocity and forgiveness chart your course to fulfillment and satisfaction.

7.      Purpose – Why do you want to be healthy? If you don’t know where you are going, you will never get there. If you don’t know why you’re trying, you are not motivated to try. To be healthy, you need a clear sense of your gifts, your talents, and your purpose.  With this, you are a true force in the world. Without it, you are unstable and vulnerable.

Your Share Of Your State Debt

The states are broke, and like many consumers, they’re borrowing big time to get out of their fiscal binds.

The amount of debt that states are carrying spiked 10.3% last year to $460 billion, according to Moody’s Investors Service. The debt is paid for through taxes and fees, making residents ultimately responsible.

Tax Tsunami On The Horizon

At 12:01 a.m. on January 1, 2011, the largest tax increase in American history could go into effect if Congress fails to act.

As the Investor’s Business Daily editorial board explains:
“Unless something’s done soon, the new year will also come with a raft of tax hikes — including a return of the death tax — that will be real killers.”

These tax increases could cost $2.6 trillion over the next decade, stalling our economic recovery — and threatening millions of American jobs.
For a family of four earning $50,000 a year, they could have an increase of $2,100.

Email Congress today and tell them to act now to stop the largest tax increase in our country’s history.
